You get to adjust a little dial and depending on what stage you're at, different concentrations of white and grey matter come out. It feels gritty, but unlike most coarse exfoliaters, the "grit" in this product is very very fine, almost like sand. The first time I used it, my face turned red for half an hour or so, but was extremely smooth. Maybe I rubbed the most vigorously the first time, but i haven't noticed such dramatic results in subsequent uses.
